Honey with Wheatgrass – super rich nutritional supplement
Honey with Wheatgrass is a health food which contains Wheatgrass extract mixed in honey.
Wheatgrass refers to the young grass of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum, that is freshly dried into powder for consumption. It provides chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Claims about wheatgrass’ health benefits range from providing supplemental nutrition to having unique curative properties. Wheatgrass, also called “Green Gold” is one of the so-called green foods that are valued by health-conscious individuals as a great natural source of nutrients. It contains 70% chlorophyll, which is often referred to as the blood of plant life. Chlorophyll has been shown to produce an unfavourable environment for bacterial growth in the body and therefore effective in increasing the body’s resistance to illness. Wheatgrass is considered to be a complete food in itself.
Wheatgrass for beta-thalassemia, blood disorder – Beta thalassemia is a blood disorder which leads to a decrease in the production of haemoglobin. Haemoglobin (Hb) is a protein in red blood cells that contains an iron molecule. The main function of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues and to exchange the oxygen for carbon dioxide, and then carry the carbon dioxide back to the lungs. There it is exchanged for oxygen. The iron molecule in haemoglobin helps maintain the normal shape of red blood cells. For people with beta thalassemia, low levels of haemoglobin result in a lack of oxygen in parts of the body. There is conflicting research on Wheatgrass and its ability to help with beta-thalassemia. Early research suggests that consuming 1 to 4 grams of Wheatgrass daily for over 12 months may help reduce the frequency of blood transfusion in patients with beta-thalassemia, however, more research on this is required to substantiate this claim.
Wheat grass high in Nutrients & Antioxidants – Antioxidants fight free radicals to prevent cell damage & reduce oxidative stress. Some studies have found that antioxidants may help against conditions like heart disease, cancer, arthritis & neuro-degenerative diseases. Wheat grass or Wheatgrass is less in calories. It is a great source of protein, but it is not a complete protein. It contains chlorophyll, essential amino acids that need to be consumed from food (and cant be produced by the body on its own), important antioxidants including glutathione, vitamins C & E. Like other plant-based superfoods, wheatgrass is an excellent source of fibre, which may help reduce blood glucose. It is also said to help support healthy digestion. In animal and lab studies wheatgrass has been suggested to bring down oxidative stress, improve cholesterol levels and improve immunity. Additional research and human testing are however required to support the above claims.
Wheatgrass for ulcerative colitis -Ulcerative colitis is a persistent or chronic inflammation of the large intestine also called the Colon. In the digestive system, at the Colon water is removed from the undigested material. The leftover waste material is stored. The rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus. In patients with ulcerative colitis, ulcers (a sore that does not heal) & inflammation (a part that becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and also painful, as a result of an injury or infection) of the inner lining of the colon lead to complaints of abdominal pain, diarrhea, & rectal bleeding. A study points to the possible positive effect of wheatgrass in ulcerative colitis. The study found Wheat Grass was responsible for reductions in ulcerative colitis and reduced the severity of rectal bleeding. However, this is still early research into its role with UC. Wheatgrass’s powerful antioxidant activity & high anti-inflammatory properties coupled with high chlorophyll, vitamins & minerals may be the reason for its beneficial effects in ulcerative colitis.
Man has prized honey as a sweetener and food since the days of the Stone Age hunter-gatherers. The viscid liquid is produced by bees from the nectar they collect from flowers a single tablespoon of honey requiring the nectar of some eighteen thousand flowers. The honey sugars break down into substances that inhibit the growth of bacteria, and the ancients used it to treat wounds, burns and skin problems. Besides sugars (about 75 per cent) and water, honey contains small amounts of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulphur, phosphorus and protein. Traditionally, honey has been used as a ‘tonic’ or ‘pick-me-up’, and in the treatment of Anemia, Kidney complaints and circulation problems. Its soothing effects are well known. Juice of ginger mixed with honey relieves a cough and a sore throat. Honey may also help Hay fever victims.
Why combine Wheatgrass with Honey – Honey is an excellent medium for transmitting the benefits of Wheatgrass to the body. Honey acts as a sweetener, thereby making the extracts of Wheatgrass more palatable. Together Honey with Wheatgrass provides the body with many essential nutrients & vitamins.
