Molecular formula: C20H24N2O2

Quinine is a natural white crystalline alkaloid having antipyretic (fever-reducing), antimalarial, analgesic (painkilling), and anti-inflammatory properties and a bitter taste. It is a stereoisomer of quinidine. Quinine is a blood schizonticidal agent and is active against the asexual erythrocytic forms of P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale and P. vivax. The drug is not active against sporozoites or preerythrocytic or exoerythrocytic forms of plasmodia. Quinine is also gametocytocidal for P. malariae and P. vivax but has no direct action against the gametocytes of P. falciparum. Quinine is indicated for the treatment of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria, either alone, with pyrimethamine and a sulfonamide, or with a tetracycline. It is also considered alternative therapy for chloroquine-sensitive strains of P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale and P. vivax. Quinine is made from Cinchona bark.

At Himachal Pharmaceuticals we manufacture both Quinine Sulphate and Quinine Hydrochloride. These are only available for bulk requirements as Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients for the Pharmaceutical or Drug manufacturing companies, agents or other industrial bulk consumers.
